Using Music & Movement to develop character and discipline

“The perfection of movement is spiritual.” -  Maria Montessori Movement and Character.

In Movement class, the children explored using their whole body to shape alphabet letters. Glimpses of their imagination was apparent in their faces as their bodies playfully contorted into what may or may not have been that obvious which letter they were forming! All of the children’s spatial and cross body awareness development has clearly grown - subtle but exciting to witness during the repetition of our weekly  yoga poses.  This is especially noticeable  in some of the deeper lunge/warrior 2 or challenging balance poses (tree, warrior 3).

Self-Discipline and Music:

Music time begins with group songs, singing, and then opens up to more independent music play/study time.

The children are generally choosing between

glockenspiel keyboard, or ukulele and selecting one of the following songs, listed in ascending difficulty:

  • Hot Cross Buns

  • Woodpecker

  • Twinkle

  • I'm a little TeaPot

We discuss enjoying free music time but also having the self-discipline to repeat the challenging parts of songs in order to play them beautifully.   If parents are able to encourage a few minutes of music practice at home, this will assist their child develop what Maria Montessori referred to as a "sense of inner discipline" and increasingly acquired ability and creativity.

Fun listening game at home: Shuffle a variety of musical genres and ask children whether its

  • classical

  • blues

  • rock

  • reggae

  • latin

. This helps children tune in to the rhythm and style of a song and possibly identify it ;)

As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments.
